Ithaki island

Ithaki island

The island owes its name to Ithakos, the first inhabitant of the island. The name of the island has been known since ancient times, and plays a major role in the Odyssey of Homer because, according to many historians, Odysseus came from here. It is an elongated island with an area of 96 square kilometers and a coastal length of 100 km. The eastern side of the island is characterized by the many bays and capes. The western side is steep, the only bay here is the bay of Polis in the north.

Although it seems like a green island, there is a lack of water on Ithaki. Ithaki is actually a barren island, because there is water scarcity and that is also the reason that there is little agriculture. The island’s economy depends mainly on tourism and fishing, although there are also olive groves and vineyards.
